SAN FRANCISCO MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

This museum is home to many different collections of contemporary and modern art.  It focuses only on 20th century art and artist.  The permanent collection has over 33,000 paintings, sculptures, photographs, and media arts.  The exhibit space is over 170,000 square feet.  This amount of space makes it one of the large modern AND contemporary art museums in the entire world!  There are about 20 exhibitions and three hundred educational programs at the Museum each year.

 FERRY PLAZA FARMERS MARKET

Regardless of the weather, each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday you can find over a hundred vendors selling local produce, crafts, and fresh made foods at the Ferry Plaza and Ferry Building.  Local farmers sell their organic seasonal produce, artisanal food, fresh cheeses, meats, fruits and so much more!  It is a fun, exciting place to spend some time!

PALACE OF FINE ARTS

The Palace of Fine Arts is a magnificent, over the top building built in 1915 as an art exhibition space for the Panama-Pacific Exposition.  Bernard Maybeck, the architect of the Palace of Fine Arts, was inspired by Roman and Greek ruins and surrounded his creation with gardens and walking paths.  Even after the exhibition was complete, the palace was so beautiful that it was preserved and is still used for art exhibitions and lavish parties.

CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCES, SAN FRANCISCO

Located in Golden Gate Park, the Academy is surrounded by beautiful gardens and lots of green space.  If you are visiting San Francisco, it’s a place you definitely don’t want to miss!  You can view a planetarium, aquarium, and even a national history museum!  There are 4 floors occupied by a real rainforest, and in the aquarium you can see an amazing coral reef.

CABLE CAR MUSEUM

In the neighborhood of Nob Hill, you can find the Washington-Mason powerhouse and car barn.  This cable car museum contains a fantastic collection of mechanical displays, photos, and historical cable cars.  Fun fact-the working cable cars are also considered to be a working museum!  There is one perfect restored car that still runs that is the only existing car from the original cable car company!

   EMPEROR NORTON’S FANTASTIC SAN FRANCISCO TIME MACHINE

This fun, unique and informative walking tour will show you many of San Francisco’s historic spots!  It is led by the self-crowned and appointed Emperor Norton I, Emperor of the US and Protector of Mexico.  This colorful but very knowledgeable character is someone San Francisco is famous for!  It involves a 2-mile-long tour that takes about 3 hours.

COIT TOWER

This 210-foot Art Deco tower is built of reinforced and unpainted concrete.  It is located in Telegraphy Hill, in the heart of Pioneer park. It was built in 1933 and is listed in the National Register of Historical Places.  There are a series of fresco murals on the interior.  Guided or unguided tours of the frescos are available for those interested.   You also have an incredible view of the city from the top of the tower.  A fee elevator will take you up to the top of the tower.

FORT POINT

Fort Point was built by US Army Engineers  between 1853 and 1861.  It is located on a vantage point overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, and it was built as an important defense system to help protect and defend San Francisco Bay.  The guns have never fired a shot in battle, but the fort has witnessed Civil War, earthquakes, the building of the Golden Gate Bridge, and is also listed as a National Historical Site.  You have the choice of a self-guided tour, or a guided 30-minute tour.

THE WALT DISNEY FAMILU MUSEUM

This museum features the life of Walt Disney and the history corporation.  It traces the rise of his multibillion dollar company all the way from Mickey Mouse to Mary Poppins to Disneyland.  This wonderful museum celebrates his life and accomplishments.  There are person stories and professional accomplishments with interactive experiences for the children.
