Riverside is located in Riverside, County, California. It is located in the Inland Empire metro area, and is the county seat of…you guessed it Riverside County! In the early 1870’s Riverside was started. Riverside, California is actually the “birthplace” of the citrus industry and is home to the Mission Inn. The Mission in is the largest Mission Revival Style building in the United States. The Riverside National Cemetery is also located there.
In the northeastern part of the city, you can find the University of Riverside. It hosts the Riverside Sports Complex. Other big attractions include the Fox Performing Arts Center, the Riverside Metropolitan Museum (which houses exhibits and artifacts of local history) the California Museum of Photography, and the California Citrus Historic Park.

The History of Riverside, California
In the early 1800’s and late 1700’s, the Serrano people and Cahuilla people lived in Riverside. People from California, most notably Bernardo Yorba and Juan Bandini actually built ranches during the first half of the 19th century. Louis, Prevost, in the 1860’s, launched the California Silk Center Association. It did not last, and John W. North purchased some of the lands and formed the Southern California Colony Association to help develop the area.
North, previously had founded Northfield, Minnesota. He was an abolitionist, did not like alcohol, and was originally from the state of New York. As Riverside grew 4 bars started in Riverside. Under the influence of the North, the license and fees for the saloons were continually increased until the saloons left Riverside. Interestingly enough, the first golf course and polo field in Southern California were built in Riverside due to rich investors from Canada and England.
Orange trees were first planted in Riverside in 1871, but in 1874 Brazilian navel orange trees arrived in Riverside which made the Citrus industry in Riverside very important. These navel orange trees were sent by William Saunders, who was a horticulturist at the US Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. Interestingly enough, the citrus trees did not find success in Florida, but they became big business in Southern, California–specifically, Riverside, California.
