The Orange County zoo started back when Red Foxes were introduced in the Irvine Park Region in 1905 by J.A. Turner. A rancher from Tustin, named Sam Nau, started a small collection of animals–some of which were pet mule deer. Sam Naul then decided to build a corral for the park that had male mule deer. Believe it or not, an alligator exhibit was the main attraction until 1935 at which time a bird attraction was added. It included doves, parakeets, quail, and cockatoos.
The current formation of the zoo opened, officially in 1985 and was called the Irvine Park Zoo, but is name is now the OC Zoo. The zoo is maintained and run and owned by Orange County.
